As a rule, a Political Municipality consists of one or several Cadastral Municipality.

Each Cadastral Municipality has a unique name and number, for example Cadastral Municipality Schwechat (05220).

The subdivision into Cadastral Municipalities forms the basis for administering the Land Register and the cadastre. It enables precise allocation of properties and facilitates both legal and surveying documentation.
