What is the Business Register?

The Business Register is the Austrian equivalent of the German Business Register and the UK Companies House. It is a public register of the Republic of Austria in which all registered businesses are entered – including Sole Traders, Unlimited Partnerships, Limited Partnerships, Limited Liability Companies, Joint-Stock Companies, Cooperative Societies, Foundations and other legal entities subject to registration.

Each entry in the Business Register receives a unique Business Register Number (FN), consisting of digits and a check letter. This number serves as the unique identifier of a company.

The Business Register makes a significant contribution to transparency and legal certainty in commercial transactions. Business partners, investors and customers can always verify whether a company exists legally and who represents it.

Official information on enquiries to the Business Register can be found on the website of the Federal Ministry of Justice (BMJ).
